Hi, I’m Thabit. I’m a math tutor, working with a wide variety of students from both general and special educational settings.
My Philosophy
I believe that if a student does not understand a piece of mathematics then it is the teacher’s responsibility to thoughtfully engage with them to find a way of explaining the math so they can. I challenge students to explain their thinking, as the process of articulation can improve the understanding itself.
I see value in defining learning as a way of experiencing something differently.
Hence, I aim to raise student awareness by giving them opportunities to experience concepts differently. In this way, they have the potential to learn something new from a situation they may already be familiar with. Through questioning, I develop their ability to identify what questions should be asked, so that they will be able to ask themselves those questions independently.
All too frequently, students are asked to think about questions in class but are not given sufficient time to do so.
I believe the most important thing my students can do is to stop and think. In fact, I consistently encourage them to think and think again as a metacognitive strategy to develop their understanding of a situation. Consequently, as I have become more experienced as a teacher, I have given my students increasingly more time to reflect on situations independently.
